Answers to the most common questions we receive about ACP Member Insurance

ACP Member Insurance is an endorsed member benefit program sponsored by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It’s not a separate insurance company, but rather a member benefit that ACP offers to its 163,000+ internal medicine physician members. The insurance programs are administered by AGIA Affinity and underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company. These insurance products are available exclusively to ACP members at specially negotiated rates that leverage the collective bargaining power and favorable health profile of the physician membership.

Yes, membership is required in order to be eligible for any products sponsored through ACP on this website. Some products allow you to apply for your spouse or family as well; in those cases, they do not need to be a member themselves.

No, not all products have the QuickDecisionSM process available. QuickDecisionSM is available for Group Disability Income Insurance, 10-Year & 20-Year Level Term Life Insurance and Group Term Life Insurance.

QuickDecisionSM allows you to get a faster decision on your application, usually without requiring a medical exam. This is done by asking health questions online along with gathering secure data sources such as prescription, medical claims history, and motor vehicle reports. Eligibility factors include coverage amount, age, and state availability.

No. Your premium is guaranteed for the first 10 years. Click the “Overview” tab above for what your options are after this initial period.

Our member-exclusive rates are based on a history of favorable claims experience with ACP members. You can also take advantage of a 20% premium credit, although not guaranteed and subject to change, the Level Term Life Insurance program for ACP members has returned premium credits for several years.

Group 20-Year Term Life

Although your employer may offer life insurance coverage, it might not be enough to help provide for the many financial obligations your family would face on their own were they to lose you. Plus, unlike most employer-provided life insurance, this coverage is portable, meaning it can stay with you even if you change jobs (subject to U.S. government regulations on restricted nations and Group Policy terms governing termination of coverage).

With Level Term Life Insurance, you can lock in your premium so it’s guaranteed to stay the same for your initial term of 20 years, giving you the reassurance that if your loved ones unexpectedly lost you, they would at least have the financial help of the insurance benefit you have arranged.

Who is eligible for coverage? You may apply for anywhere between $100,000 and $2,000,000, in multiples of $10,000, if you are an ACP Member under age 55 for the 20‑year term and a resident of the United States (except territories) and Puerto Rico.

You may also apply for coverage for your lawful spouse under age 55 for the 20‑year term for $100,000 to $2,000,000 of coverage, in multiples of $10,000. Your spouse coverage amount cannot exceed yours.

If your spouse is also an ACP member, they are eligible for either member or dependent coverage, but not both. If both you and your spouse are covered as members, neither may insure the other as spouse and only one may insure any eligible children.

You may reapply for new 20-yeal level term rates, if eligible or continue on a non-guaranteed basis if not approved.

The only exclusion is if death by suicide (whether sane or insane) occurs within 24 months from issue date (premiums returned).

Group Disability Income Insurance

This insurance is designed to help replace your income while you’re unable to work, so the money is sent directly to you, and you may use it any way you wish. Under current federal tax laws, these benefits are typically tax-free provided you pay your premiums with your own after-tax money. Consult your tax adviser for more information.

Once your application is approved and coverage is issued, you’ll receive a Certificate of Insurance. Then you’ll have 30 days to decide if you’re completely satisfied with your coverage, provided there have been no claims. If you decide this coverage isn’t right for you, return your certificate within that 30-day period. Your coverage will be cancelled, and you’ll be under no further obligation.

Unlike employer disability coverage, you may keep this insurance through your career, whether you change jobs, start your own practice, or experience a change to your employee benefits package.
